    When do you need an electrical inspection?

    In most cases, an electrical inspection is required for electrical work. Only Licensed Electrical Contractors are authorized to carry out certain work without a permit. The permit must be taken out by the person carrying out the work. Homeowners can take out permits for work they carry out on their own home. Anyone else that performs electrical work on their home must be a Licensed Electrical Contractor with a permit and insurance. Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) Authorized Contractor Program (ACP), gives you the peace of mind that this contractor has consistently carried out code-compliant work.

    Adding on to your home, remodeling a kitchen, or finishing your basement can often involve tying into electrical circuits - not a straight forward project. The age of the home and the existing wiring will determine if the wiring can be mixed with the old or if new circuits will be required. The Electrical Code is amended every three months and unqualified contractors, handymen, or homeowners will not be aware of the changes.

    Safety Tip: Ensure tools are properly grounded or double-insulated. The grounded tool must have an approved 3-wire cord with a 3-prong plug. This plug should be plugged in a properly grounded 3-pole outlet.
